With everyone’s season starting to wind down and most playoffs just finishing up, it’s time to start thinking about off-season hockey training plans.
Having a plan in place is the first thing to consider when mapping out your off-season. Of course, you also need to commit to a plan you can realistically follow! This is probably the most over-looked part of a player’s off-season.
Remember, the off-season needs to be your time to improve, not just maintain, to ensure you’ll come back BETTER next season.
Here’s how to get the best start to your off-season hockey training:
1. Make A Plan
Don’t wait until mid-June to start planning out a training program. You need to get on things pronto because each week you wait to start is another week you’ve wasted instead of getting better.
2. Take A Break
This might seem to contradict what was just said, but after the last horn sounds to end your season, you need to take some time to recover. Especially if you’ve gone on a long playoff run, your body is probably begging for a break. Give it a week or two, at the very least a few days, and just rest. Let your body recover so you’re feeling fresh to begin executing your off-season plan.
3. Build Back Up…Slowly
I wouldn’t suggest going right into extremely heavy lifts looking to increase power and explosiveness. Leave that for a couple weeks from now. Start off by getting your athletic base back. Exercises like push ups, planks, bodyweight squats, and band work are essential. A focus on form, movement, and rock-solid stability will provide the building blocks you’ll need to make major strength gains later in the off-season.
